Crochet is a wonderful and creative hobby to have. The satisfaction of creating something with your own hands is something I never get tired of. There’s many factors that goes into crocheting something, the crochet hook, yarn size, the weight of the yarn, and many more.
But one of the most important key factors that can make, or break your project is yarn tension.
Yarn tension refers to the amount of tension you you apply to the yarn as you crochet, which plays a crucial role in achieving proper stitch size with the overall quality of the project.
I will help you understand, and explore the importance, how to achieve it, and the impact it has on any of your creations!
Understanding Yarn Tension
Yarn tension is all about finding a comfortable balance between too loose and too tight. When your yarn tension is too loose, your stitches will be sloppy, uneven, and will lose its shape. While if it’s too tight, your work become extremely stiff, hard to crochet in the stitches, and will be smaller then intended. Yarn tension is especially important when crocheting the same thing multiple times. If you don’t have a consistent yarn tension some will be bigger, while others might be smaller. So if you don’t want to crochet multiple things over and over, yarn tension is important to practice.
Why Is Yarn Tension Important?
- Consistency: Even yarn tension makes your stitches look neat, uniform in size, and just gives them a polished look.
- Comfort: The right tension makes crocheting so much more comfortable, with less stress on your hands, and wrists.
- Gauge Accuracy: Having the correct gauge is important for patterns, having the right tension helps you match the patterns specified gauge.
- Yarn Efficiency: Maintaining consistent tension reduces the amount of yarn you have to use, so you don’t purchase to much yarn.
The Impact Tension Have On Your Creations
Is how stitches look, when doing a really complex stitch patterns like the moss stitch can make the texture more defined. If you have poor tension you won’t be able to see the texture especially with dark colored yarn.
Another thing is the finished size of your project, be mindful of this if you crochet to tightly the project while be smaller, and stiff while to loose it can unravel itself. Keep this in mind when making garments, or items that need to fit precisely.

As you can see above I used the same crochet heart pattern, yarn, and hook but you can see differences at first glance. Loose tension is bigger than the rest, but the shape is uneven and very floppy if you hold it. It will be hard to work with, when it comes to what you are crocheting.
In the middle is my even tension, it's a medium size heart that's even. Not to stiff, and to floppy the heart holds its shape. The stitches can easily be crocheted in just nice.
But the tight tension I won't be able to insert my hook in if I wanted to change colors. It's smaller, and stiff holds it shape very well, but to well if you want it flat. It looks nice except you can't get your hook inside the stitches when you finish your project. It's like trying to push through heavy duty plastic with your crochet hook.
How To Get The Right Yarn Tension
First thing is find a comfortable position for you to hold your yarn, and crochet hook. Relax don’t have a death grip on your yarn, just hold it like a delicate flower, not too tight and not too loose.
Practice is key try different tensions to find what you like, there’s no right or wrong tension do what you like, and what’s comfortable for you. While crocheting check your work, take a few minutes to make sure your tension is even. If you don’t you might have to unravel everything, and start over, and who wants to do that? So always check every couple rows, or rounds you work.
Another thing is use the right hook for your yarn, using a smaller hook can make your tension too tight, while a larger hook can make it looser.
Understanding yarn tension is a fundamental skill that can elevate your crochet projects from nice to wonderful! It will take some time so practice to find your perfect tension, and the effort will be worth it. With the right tension you will make wonderful, beautiful, consistent, and comfortable crochet pieces that you will be proud to show off.
So grab your hook, and yarn, and start creating wonderful things!
